JBVNL (Jharkhand BijliVitran Nigam Limited) is the largest DISCOM utility of Jharkhand State, incorporated primarily to carry out distribution of electricity to retail and bulk consumers in the state of Jharkhand. The company started operations on 6th Jan, 2014, after the unbundling of the erstwhile Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) in the year 2013. The company has a registered consumer base of around 3.2 million and a peak load of around 2,150 MW (FY 17-18).The company is involved in distribution of electricity to different categories of consumers like HT, LTIS, DS, NDS, IAS, etc. in 7 electric supply areas, viz. Ranchi, Dhanbad, Singhbhum, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Dumka and Medininagar.
Since unbundling of the State power sector, the utility has come a long way in overcoming various legacy challenges like lower per capita electricity consumption, high AT&C losses, non-reflective tariffs, inadequate workforce, limited electrification and dwindling electricity infrastructure. The State has consistently progressed on the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to ensure electricity access to every household in the State and leverage advanced digital technologies to transform. The five core areas of this journey of transformation have been the last mile electricity access, creating robust electricity infrastructure, leveraging technology for service delivery, operational and financial self-reliance and sustainable development.
Since inception, the commitment of JBVNL has been to transform itself into a vibrant, financially independent and consumer friendly utility through means of numerous path-breaking initiatives. To ensure reliable power supply and to provide best in class service to its consumers, JBVNL hastaken several initiatives like implementation of ERP & SCADA, online capex monitoring application, SMS based burnt DT reporting, android-based mobile application (eZy-bZly), facilitating bill payment, new connections, lodging complaints, integrated Geographical Information System (GIS), Saral-Samiksha (online project monitoring tool), Suvidha portal,Sashakt(24x7 toll free helpline),Urja Mitra, etc.
JBVNL’s positive attitude towards change management, dedicated staff, adoption of latest technology, proactive involvement of higher management and innovative work culture are some of the key factors responsible for the growing success and development of JBVNL in the power distribution sector.
To reduce the dependency on conventional energy sources, JBVNL has signed a PPA for 200 MW wind energy with PTC and the power is scheduled to be available from December 2018. Additional PPA for 300 MW wind energy has been signed with SECI and the power is scheduled to be available from March 2019.Further, JBVNL is in process to buy additional 200 MW of wind power from SECI. Additionally, JBVNL is in process of procuring 750 MW of solar power as well. Utility has distributed more than 1.24 Crores LED bulbs to the consumers under Ujala Scheme resulting into energy and cost saving of 16.11 Lac MWh and Rs. 645 Crores, respectively. This has also helped in avoiding nearly 13.05 Lac tonnes of CO2.
